For Manchester, For It Is The Place – Artist Carole Holcroft
Growing up in a small village in the North West of England, Manchester was my local city. Nestled in the natural beauty of the mountains and hills of the Pennines, fondly referred to as the “Backbone of England ” it is the place of legends.
It is the place where I went to college, and the place I was first employed.
It is the place of diversity, passionately created by centuries of working class families. A city built on steel manufacturing, and cotton mills, delivering its products to the rest of the world, via a hand dug 36 mile inland waterway called the Manchester Ship Canal, connecting Manchester to the Irish Sea.
It is the place of two rival soccer teams; the home to Manchester United red’s and Manchester City blues. Famous footballers such as Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law and Brian Kidd have helped mold a generation of enthusiastic youth.
It is the place where the suffragette movement was born through a local lass named Emily Pankhurst, the computer was first built and where the “boddy of all bitters” is brewed at Boddington’s Brewery.
It is the place where groups and bands such as the Bee Gee’s and Oasis have expanded their creative nature.
It is the place that Manchester’s most famous artist, L.S. Lowry, who because of the cities unique urban landscape, developed his own distinctive style of painting.
It is a city in mourning.
The colors of Manchester, a great city. This is my tribute to a place that helped shaped me, and the rest of the world.
